Phone
Landline phone numbers contain 10 figures, beginning with 05.
Mobile phone numbers begin either with 06 or 07.
- To phone France from abroad, dial 00 + 33 followed by the 9-figure number you want to call (the 10-figure number without the 0).
- To phone another country from France, dial 00 + the country code + the number you want to call.
- For local calls within France, simply dial the 10-figure number, which always begins with a 0.
Please note that France no longer has any public phone boxes. The simplest and most practical way is to buy pre-buy phone cards (mobile top-ups, prepaid cards, etc.), which are available from post offices, tobacconists and souvenir shops.
Remember that mobile phone roaming charges between European countries were discontinued in summer 2017. This means that when you arrive in France, calls, texts and even mobile Internet access will cost you no more than at home.
Visitors from outside Europe should consult their mobile phone service provider about the conditions governing the use of their mobile phones in France.
Post
Post offices are usually open Monday to Friday from 9 am to 6 pm, and from 9 am to 12:30 pm on Saturdays. All provide inland international letter and parcel services.
Postage costs vary depending on the weight of your letter and its destination. Letters posted in France for France are delivered within 1 to 2 days; letters from France to other countries may take up to 5 days at the normal rate.
French letterboxes are yellow and can be found at the roadside and opposite every post office. You can use them to post your letters and postcards. Each letterbox indicates the next collection time.
Internet
WiFi is the only free form of Internet access and online telephony services (Whatsapp, Skype, Facetime, etc.).
Almost all types of accommodation, restaurants, bars and even public transport - TGV high-speed trains and intercity buses, for example - offer free WiFi access. As a result, Internet cafés are becoming scarcer, but you can still find a few that will give you access to a computer and the Internet.
You can also use your mobile to access your e-mail and favourite apps, of course ;)
