ANGOULEME - CHATEAUNEUF-SUR-CHARENTE
Start: in Angoulême
Arrival: Châteauneuf/Charente
Time: 1h41 - Distance: 25.37 km
Along the Charente valley
This stage is marked by the alternation between Angoulême and Châteauneuf, the route of the Flow Vélo® alternates between the right bank and the left bank of the Charente river and invites you to discover the river by taking a little height but also by brushing it with wheels…
From Angoulême, you will soon meet the loop of the Charente in Fléac before reaching the village of Trois-Palis, where you will not be able to resist the visit of the chocolate factory Letuffe. This artisan chocolate factory is the most famous in Charente! You will find the famous Marguerite d'Angoulême (chocolate flavored with orange) and other specialties such as Charentaise truffandines or guinettes (cherries with cognac)
The route continues until Saint-Simeux, whose village rises to 80 meters of altitude. The Flow Vélo®, on the other hand, runs at the foot of the village, where water mills and river transport used to be the main economy of the municipality.
From the bridge that you quickly reach at the exit of Saint Simeux, admire the view of the church that dominates the valley, the old eel fisheries and the water mill. The opportunity to take a picture worthy of a postcard!
Continue towards the village of Mosnac which has a dozen 19th century farms and several 16th century houses. At 2 km from your arrival and from the center of Châteauneuf-sur-Charente, the Ladies' bath is a pleasant sandy beach calling for a stroll. It is located opposite Mattard Island and very close to the Véloroute.
In the town centre of Chateauneuf-sur-Charente, the church of Saint-Pierre-aux-Liens presents a beautiful Romanesque facade inspired by the cathedral of Angoulême. Between the church and the town hall with neoclassical architecture, the old streets feature mansions (15th century Berdeville house) and old fronts.
