Muséum d'Histoire Naturelle Bordeaux

Great news, the Natural History Museum in Bordeaux re-opens its doors

Since 1862, the Natural History Museum in Bordeaux has been located in a grand town-house (the Hôtel de Lisleferme), situated on the edge of the public park. Created in 1791, and now re-christened Muséum de Bordeaux – sciences et nature, with over 1 million exhibits on display it is one of the major museums in France.

Museum d'histoire naturelle Bordeaux, Miss Fanny

For its refurbishment, the new Muséum de Bordeaux presents a contemporary approach to Natural History with a new museum trail, interactive displays and a multimedia show.

Visitors will be blown away by the emblematic species waiting to welcome them in the entrance, including "Miss Fanny" the elephant, and the skeleton of a Blue Whale in the main hall.

On the first floor, they'll be able to (re)discover the totally renovated oval room, a flexible space dedicated to regional themes. On the second floor, the 19th century gallery with its restored wall-mounted display cabinets, presents the theme "nature through the eyes of man" from the 18th century to the present day. In the basement, over 500 m2 of extra floor space is exclusively reserved for temporary exhibitions.

Small kids (the under 6's) will also be pleased with the renovation as special attention has been paid to them too with the "Museum for tiny tots".

Why not end your visit with a walk around the public park, land that was originally used for vines before being converted into a garden open to the public (a big first!) in 1746 by the illustrious Tourny. A French garden in the style of "Le Nôtre" that has received the "Outstanding Gardens" label. If you want refreshments, L’Orangerie du Jardin Public is a good address and a great place to relax!
