Located in a loop in the Vézère, north of Eyzies, the troglodyte village of Madeleine is one of the best examples of the long tradition of human occupation in this area of Périgord Noir.
The prehistoric deposit is found at the foot of the cliff. It has particular stone and bone tools and many works of art which have enabled the definition of a new period in the evolution of Cro-Magnon, which it has given its name to, the Magdalenian culture.
Certainly from the 8th century, a population settled in what was then the height of comfort and safety. The ruins of a fairly large fortified castle illustrate the defensive aspects of the site.
The inhabitants abandoned the site some years later with the growing popularity of the gas engine and the development of the railway and then returned, following age-old tradition.

Just a stone's throw from the Lascaux cave in the Dordogne and 20km from Sarlat, the village of Coly-Saint-Amand, magnificently restored and classified "Most Beautiful Villages in France"
Saint-Amand-de-Coly, has several houses and pigeon lofts typical of the Périgord Noir, but above all, a majestic 12th century abbey church considered to be the most beautiful fortified church in the Périgord.
With its grey tiles, yellow and ochre stones, the church of the former abbey of Coly-Saint-Amand is the archetype of a fortified sanctuary. From the prison tower housing a defence chamber, to the watchtower concealed in the transept, the ensemble is impressive. The ramparts and the multiple defence points of the church give an idea of the importance of this Augustinian abbey which reigned over vast territories and resisted the trials of the Hundred Years' War as well as the wars of religion.
Just a few minutes from Sarlat, La table de Jean offers a warm atmosphere in a setting where authenticity and modernity blend together.
Enjoy generous and gourmet cuisine, prepared from fresh market produce, 'home-made' dishes to discover the products that constitute the culinary richness of the Dordogne.
The Micoque archaeological deposit is the oldest site in the Vézère Valley and a fundamental element in our understanding of the beginning of the Paleolithic.
Its stratigraphy is nearly 10 m / 32 ft high and covers more than 300,000 years of chronology.
The site is a listed historic monument.
Au Temps d'Eugénie is a manufacturer of tasty jams, nectars and artisan specialities, whose origins lie in a collection of recipes from the 19th century.
The "city" of Clairvivre was designed and built to treat people suffering from lung disease after the First World War, without separating them from their families. This unusual place is a real utopian city in the countryside, where one finds beside small white pavilions, shops, restaurants, hiking trails and an equestrian centre. Classified as part of France’s 20th century Heritage.
Welcome to the Jardins de l'Imaginaire, created in 1996 by Pierre Delmon, Mayor of Terrasson-Lavilledieu, situated high above the Vézère river in Perigord Noir. This major cultural site labelled as a remarkable garden extends over more than 6 ha. Kathryn Gustafson, landscape architect, has integrated very contemporary architectural lines into the Périgord landscape, illustrating the way man communicates with Nature.
From the beginning of the journey, a golden ribbon winds through the trees, inviting you on the path of imagination... Water effects and wind movements accompany you through thirteen themed gardens. The theatre of vegetation offers you a unique view over the old town of Terrasson-Lavilledieu, the water gardens refresh you, the rose garden stirs your senses, the greenhouse, designed by architect Ian Ritchie, embodies the creative encounter between dry stone, glass and metal.
