Every year, the commune of Laruns celebrates the end of the summer pastures grazing season with the celebration of the work done by its shepherds. You too can take part in this end-of-summer event by attending the Laruns Cheese Fair 40 km south of Pau.
In the valleys of Béarn, cheese is considered as a dish in its own right. The happy result of all the hard work done by local shepherds, cheese - whether made with sheep’s, goat’s or cow’s milk - is an essential accompaniment to every meal.
Traditionally, the first weekend of October is when Laruns celebrates its cheese and its shepherds. The village puts on its best party clothes and revives the traditions of the province of Béarn.
At the highpoint of the festivities, a competition is held on Sunday to identify the best Ossau Valley cheeses of the year.
The two-day programme
Traditional Béarnaise hospitality, costumes, dancing and singing, cheese tasting, sheep shearing demonstrations, cheesemaking demonstrations and many other surprises.
Curious foodies, lovers of tradition and traditional expertise will not want to miss this opportunity to smell, taste and experience this delicious cultural heritage that is still passed on from generation to generation.
