This is an unmissable attraction in our area, Châlus-Chabrol is known worldwide as a symbol of the famous English king, Richard the Lion Heart. Said King was fatally injured in the castle in 1199. The arrow that entered his body made him suffer for a few days, before he took his last breath in front of the fireplace in the guard room.
The castle still represents the resistance of the Viscounts of Limoges against the Plantagenets. It has belonged to famous families such as the Sully, Albret, Borgia and Bourbon families. The remains of King Richard lie in the chapel.
Shop and food available on site.
Châlus is located to the south-west of Limoges, near the Dordogne border. It is one of Limousin’s gateway towns to the Périgord-Limousin Regional Nature Park. Châlus is also a « station verte » (France’s main Eco-labels) in the heart of La Châtaigneraie (known for its chestnut trees). It is an ideal spot for outdoor activities, such as cycling, which is possible along the “voie verte” trail from Châlus to Oradour-sur-Vayres. History lovers will enjoy learning about the Hundred Years war and how King Richard the Lionheart was mortally wounded right here in Châlus. The town is also part of the famous “Richard the Lionheart Trail”. Our Tourist Office also invites visitors to discover the other towns in the Châlus area: Bussière-Galant, Dournazac, Flavignac, Lavignac, Les Cars and Pageas.
At the start of the 21st century, all is well in the little world of the Poï?z. Everything? No! The good Zéroïk is bored. No lady to rescue, no "top secret" mission to accomplish? Times are hard for a knight in shining armor. I've got an idea under my helmet! Why don't I take our favorite paladin on a tandem tour of the Limousin countryside? That'll give him a bit of a workout. Come on, hop! Off to the station!
