History: Following a bequest (1690-1695) from Dr Pascaud, master surgeon and his wife Mme Chocqueur, a hospital with a chapel was built in Chalais in the 17th century, in favor of the disciples of St-Vincent de Paul.
This hospital was authorized by letters patent in 1726. In 1727 the nuns of St Dominic de Magnac in Limousin took over the management. They were replaced in 1843 by the sisters of Ste-Marthe until the years 1970-1980.
Since its origin this chapel has been public. It was blessed on May 14, 1872 and dedicated to Notre Dame. Presumably the original hospital having undergone currently undetermined degradation, it was rebuilt between 1868 and 1872 thanks to numerous donations. The architect was Edouard Warin, disciple and replacement of Paul Abadie in the diocese and in the city of Angoulême.
The hospital having disappeared, it was transformed into a hospice. The first floor of the southern part was reserved for women, the ground floor for men. The northern part was occupied by a girls' school.
In 1870 the municipality was the owner. She sold it to the Chalais hospice in 1903, no doubt after the bequest of Helie de TALLEYRAND's property in 1882. The hospice having been transferred to the castle, the north wing was sold in 1978 to the administration. of the post office, then exchanged with the municipality which fitted out the current media library. The municipality of Chalais is again the owner after its purchase at the retirement home on February 16, 2010.
A video is broadcast inside the chapel, it traces the history of it and the work carried out during its rehabilitation, a second allows to see the chapel from a drone (both visible on Youtube).
