Located at the confluence of the Tude and Viveronne rivers, Chalais is a village of 1,700 inhabitants bordering the Dordogne and Saintonge regions. If you are looking for historical stories and heritage, look no further. This is the town for you!
Among the emblematic monuments of this village, you will find the cloister of Chalais. It was built in the 17th century by the princess of Chalais, Jeanne-Françoise de Talleyrand. The building is open on rare occasions, mainly in summer, for the Antiques Fair or the Arts and Crafts Fair.
How to evoke Chalais without talking about its castle? Dominating the Tude valley, this imposing monument fascinates by its history and its remarkable state of conservation. For nearly six centuries it was the property of the Talleyrand-Périgord family. An influential family, close to the court, and at the origin of a plot in 1626 to assassinate the Cardinal of Richelieu. But why, you ask? The answer will be revealed to you during the guided tour of the castle, organized by the Association for the Safeguarding of the Heritage of the Pays de Chalais. Perhaps on this occasion, you will be able to meet the famous humorist and owner of the place, Yves Lecoq.
Don't leave the village without having tasted its local specialty: the Veal of Chalais! A delicate and refined dish, with an incomparable flavor, that you can discover in the restaurants of our regional chefs. You will also find this product at the market, on the stalls of our butchers, every Monday of the week.
Finally, it will be possible to complete this culinary experience with a digestive stroll along the Tude. Picnic areas will be at your disposal at the "aire des lutins", as well as games for the children.
In a house of character at the foot of the Château de Talleyrand in Chalais you are offered four double bedrooms, a suite and a furnished apartment, as well as a five-person gite in one of its outbuildings.
Common lounge, continental breakfast served in the dining room or on the terrace depending on the weather. The four double bedrooms, queen size bed and bathroom with walk-in shower and toilet, welcome product, hair dryer, kettle, tea, coffee. The suite and the furnished apartment, each of which can accommodate up to two to four people, including living room, kitchenette, a double bedroom and a bathroom with bath and toilet, welcome product, hair dryer, kettle, tea, coffee. The cottage is composed of a double bedroom, a bedroom triple, equipped kitchen, living room, two toilets, a bathroom and a terrace with garden furniture.

The imposing castle of Chalais is a real eye-catcher, it dominates the town from its rocky spur. Enter the castle via its drawbridge, one of the few still in working order, and plunge into the history of the Talleyrand-Périgord.
This imposing castle was once the family home of the aristocratic Talleyrand-Périgord family. Access to the main coutyard is via a 16th century drawbridge, one of the few working examples of this kind of drawbridge in France. The Renaissance-style architecture of the main living area of the castle is remarkable for its typical 17th century façade. Since late 2011 the castle has been owned by french comedian Yves Lecoq. A guided tour of the castle focuses on the story of the Talleyrand-Périgord family and the castle's rebirth, with details and anectodes from experts of the heritage Association pour la Sauvegarde du Patrimoine de Chalais. The Château de Chalais also offers the rental of reception rooms (with the possibility of overnight stay). For any information concerning the rental of rooms, contact Mr. Bruneau at 06 76 45 50 64 or by email at the following address: cvinejlb@hotmail.fr
